Unser jetziger steirischer Landeshauptmann
Hr. Mag. Franz Voves (damals 1. LHptm.Stv.) eröffnet "offiziell"
durch das Durchsägens eines Balkens das Museum.

...for our foreign guests a nice recipe :
"Sterz" was the traditional meal of the loggers in former times
(after that meal you had enough energy to cut a whole forest)
"Sterz"
cooking recipe:
mix a dough of floor with water, add a little bit salt
Roasting "Abbrennen"
of the dough in a pan over
the fire:
put the dough spoon by spoon in a pan with
hot fat, traditionally lard.
Stir it until the dough gets roasted and loosens from the bottom of the pan.
Spread blueberrys (or other berry in season) and sugar over the baked "Sterz"
Sterz is best served with coffee
Enjoy your meal!

The museum contains exhibition objects mostly from the 19th/20th century with following scopes
living of the loggers in former times
forest work in bygone times
exhibition objects of the historical daily life in the Mürzsteg
The guided tours in and around the
museum are mostly performed personally from the initiator and chairman of the
museum society mister Wieland Hans.
Guided tours are possible against notice in advance by Mr. Wieland or the Mürzsteg
municipal office.
Actually 866 catalogized exhibition
objects with focus on logging in bygone times can be can be viewed.
The catalogization of further objects out of a large fund is still in progress.
Be pleasantly surprised if the amount of the exhibited objects has in the meantime
considerably increased...
Especially the collections of different saws and axes from different manufacteres,
sizes and shapes are well worth seeing.
"Antique" chain saws are as well exhibited. A beauty is the two man
Stiehl chain saw with the manufactory date 1941. This chain saw is fully functioning
and is used at special opportunities like felling the maipole "Maibaumumschneiden"
or other opportunities to attract public audience.
Idea and Genesis of a museum...
The idea for
the errection of a museum with focus on logging and forest work influenced for
a long time the thoughts of
Mr. Hans Wieland.
Mr. Wieland found it a pity that many common things of "his" work
and daily life were collected from professional collectors or, much worse, were
simply thrown to garbage.
More and more objects which where to Mr. Wieland familiar or had great value
to him vanished continously.
So Mr. Wieland decided to collect the remaining tools and objects of daily life
and exhibit in a museum for coming generations.
NOTE: Mr. Wieland is to allocate rather the "elder" age-group. For
that reason he knows all exhibited objects from his own use and can therefore
explain a lot about the use and tell many stories in a authenticate way from
the vanished "good old time". Therefore every tour around his museum
always "differs" a little from the other and is orientated always
to the interests of his visitors. Be assured you will prefer his way of guiding
you -drawn from life- every standarized guided tour.
The Implementation
of "his" Idea required in first instance one thing: to convince
the Mürzsteg municipal council to spend money and an estate for his museum.
A suited estate was quickly found and an old hut made of timber already destinated
for demolition could be bought cheap.
Long before beginning with his museum Mr. Wieland assured himself with his charism
and a lot of suasion of the assistance and cooperation of many fellow citizens
from the neighbourhood to perform all the work around his museum. In the long
run it had not been possible without the gratuitous help of neighbours and specialists
to errect "his" museum.
So the question of raising money kept be the main point.
It remains the question of money!
Especially raising money made a lot of problems to the burgomaster and the municipal
council of Mürzsteg, but last but not least, the outstanding problems could
be solved with a lot of understanding and the know how.
As Sponsoring so called "Museumsbausteine" were issued to finance
the ongoing costs for errection and continuation of the museum project.
The Completion
couldn't be stopped after all delays and problems (mostly with financing).
At 24th Mai 2002 the museum was for the time beeing opened in "trial operation"
.
The grand opening on the
25th April 2003 was a donnybrook!
representatives of the provincial government (like the 1st vice governor Mag.
Franz Voves and Bezirkshauptmann Hofrat Dr. Gerhard Ofner) payed respect. The
clergy (Dr. Peter Schleicher and Mag. Ulrike Drösler) made the inauguration.
Burgomaster Karlheinz Mayer and his Vice Franz Klopf explained in speeches the
development and difficulties of financing as well as all the voluntary performed
gratis labour and all the sponsors which made the errection of the museum finally
possible.

Our present governor of Styria Mag. Franz Voves (at that time 1st vice governor) inaugurated "officially" by cutting down a small trunk in front of the museum.
Burgomaster
Karlheinz Mayer und his vice Franz Klopf, many guests of honor and approximately
200 persons from the neighbourhood and nearby villages celebrated afterwards
the opening with a donny brook at nice spring weather till late night.
Unfortunately the initiator of the museum Mr. Hans Wieland could not attend
on the celebrations, because shortly before he suffered a cardiac infarction.
Thank goodness he has already recovered by now and is fit again to work as chairman
of his beloved "Museumsverein"..
Summary:
with that building an outstanding memorial for many occurencies of the "good
old time" was built.
Many aboriginal doubter could be convinced after a visit in the museum and are
now converted to supporters of the museum.
Important for the holiday resort Mürzsteg is that the visit of the museum not only invites guests for staying in that region of Mürzer Oberland with "soft tourism" but offers also opportunities for walking tours, mountain biking and wellness to reduce stress and -with enough phantasy- to put oneself in the historical situation of the exhibited objects.
